“Jan Kuhlemeier in a ocean of colour”

Solo Exhibition at Singer-Laren Museum in Laren, the Netherlands.

THICKER THAN WATER Artcan Gallery Marseille

2022

For Jan, the most interesting part is how a work originates. He does extensive research into materials, like the distinctive characteristics of different pigments, but also how the subsurface can contribute to the way different materials react to movement. The materials he uses have different responses to his actions, leading to constant new findings.
Jan has been surfing for over ten years. He has shaped his own surfboards and for his current show he was inspired by the shaping process, and the materials he used. Breeding on this idea led to the realization of HIGH / LOW.For this exhibition, Jan created several large artworks in shapes in line with the geometrical form of the gallery space. The strong semi-transparent objects are positioned in a way that invites spectators to move around the exhibition space. An interplay is created between the artwork, the viewer and the environment. The works contain color tones and layers reminiscent of the hues in the reflection of seas and oceans that Jan has experienced in different locations around the world. These color tones are elusive illusions that arise from the play of light and reflection on surfaces.
On show at ROOT Gallery until October 29th 2022
